Jane Etta Pitt, the beloved mother of Oscar-winning actor Brad Pitt, has passed away at the age of 84, the family confirmed in a statement shared through various media outlets.
A retired school counselor and long-time Springfield resident, Jane was known for her quiet strength, her deep Christian faith, and her dedication to her family. Married to businessman William Alvin Pitt, she raised three children—Brad, Doug, and Julie—who often credited her with instilling in them a sense of compassion and resilience.
While the family has not publicly disclosed the cause of death, Jane’s passing was mourned with heartfelt tributes, especially from her granddaughter Sydney Pitt, who shared a moving message on Instagram. “My sweet Grammy, Jane Etta, we were not ready for you to go yet,” she wrote. “But knowing you are finally free to sing, dance, and paint again makes it a tad easier.”
The post, which included family photos and fond memories, went viral as fans and celebrities alike shared condolences for the Pitt family.
A Matriarch Remembered for Love and Creativity
Sydney described Jane as “love in its purest form,” reflecting on a childhood filled with meaningful moments, affectionately dubbed “Grammy Days.” These were special outings that included banana splits, movie nights, Silver Dollar City theme park visits, and board games—each one thoughtfully planned to make her grandchildren feel loved and seen.
“She could keep up with all 14 of us grandkids without missing a beat,” Sydney wrote. “We were truly blessed to have her to love on growing up. She will be missed deeply but remembered in every act of kindness we do.”
Jane Pitt’s legacy extends far beyond her famous son. While Brad Pitt has rarely spoken about his private family life, he has in the past described his mother as a grounding force throughout his career, crediting her unwavering support as key to his success.
The family is expected to hold a private memorial service in Missouri. Jane is survived by her husband William, her children Brad, Doug, and Julie Pitt, and her grandchildren.
