Following the announcement that Borderlands 4 will launch for the upcoming Switch 2 on October 3, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has shared new information about how the game will perform on Nintendo’s next-gen console.

According to Pitchford, Borderlands 4 will run at around 30 frames per second on Switch 2, though performance may drop during busy moments. “It’ll be mostly around 30fps, with some dips in intense combat or when hosting multiplayer in handheld mode,” he explained in response to fan questions online.

Pitchford also confirmed that Borderlands 4 will support the new Joy-Con 2’s mouse mode, offering more precise aiming controls for players who want a PC-like experience on a console.

One of Gearbox’s main goals for the Switch 2 version was to offer the full experience without cutting content. That includes full cross-play with other platforms like PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

However, the game’s size may require additional storage. Pitchford said that physical copies will likely be sold as Game-Key Cards, which means the cartridge will act as a license key that lets players download the full game. Even with a physical copy, players should expect a download. Game-Key Cards can be shared or resold, as they’re not locked to a single Nintendo account.

Borderlands 4 will launch earlier on other platforms, September 12 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Gearbox has also started teasing more content, including new characters like the Siren named Vex, hundreds of collectables, and even an option to silence Claptrap if his nonstop chatter isn’t your thing.
