Blake Lively’s sister, Robyn, didn’t hold back when talking about Blake’s speech at the TIME100 Gala. She opened up during an interview with People magazine at iHeartRadio’s 102.7 KIIS FM Wango Tango event in California on May 10, right in the middle of Blake’s legal battle with Justin Baldoni.
Robyn made it clear how proud she is of her sister, saying, “I’m very proud. Just so you know, very proud.” Her husband, actor Bart Johnson, backed her up, saying, “That’s a tough thing to navigate, so we’re proud.” Robyn added, “To say we’re proud is an understatement.”
Blake’s speech at the gala stirred up quite a bit of controversy, especially when she talked about her mom, Willie Elaine McAlpin. According to reports, many people online criticized Blake for sharing her mother’s story about surviving an assault by a coworker during the speech.
In the speech, Blake shared that she had a lot to say about the last two years of her life but chose not to get into it at the event. She talked about how her mom didn’t get justice after her “work acquaintance” tried to take her life when she was raising three young kids, even before Blake was born.
Blake also said that her mom was saved by hearing another woman speak on the radio about escaping a similar experience. That woman’s story gave her mom hope and courage instead of fear and shame. Blake said, “Because of hearing that woman speak about her experience instead of shutting down in fear and unfair shame, my mom is alive today. She was saved by a woman whose name she’ll never know.”
