The Bills’ conclusion as AFC East champions and the second seed in the conference might have been anticipated at the season’s outset, but their journey to that position was far from straightforward.

In their recent game against the Dolphins, the Bills secured a 21-14 victory in a manner that mirrored their season-long struggle. Despite Josh Allen and the offense managing only seven points during the initial three quarters, they eventually clinched the win. The game was marred by familiar setbacks, with turnovers posing significant issues for the Bills. Allen’s early interceptions—both thrown into the end zone—and a critical fumble that gifted possession to Christian Wilkins stifled Buffalo’s scoring potential. It wasn’t until Deonte Harty’s electrifying 96-yard punt return touchdown early in the final quarter that the momentum began to shift in Buffalo’s favor.

Following Harty’s game-changing play, the defense elevated its performance, swiftly halting the Dolphins and returning the ball to Allen. Capitalizing on this opportunity, Allen orchestrated a rapid touchdown drive, making substantial gains through Dalton Kincaid and Khalil Shakir before connecting with Dawson Knox for the go-ahead score.

Although the Bills seemed poised to seal the game with their offense in the late fourth quarter, Allen’s ruled short on a fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak thwarted their plans. This granted Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins a chance, resulting in a tense drive that reached Buffalo territory but concluded in disappointment when Tagovailoa was intercepted by Taylor Rapp with just over a minute remaining.

Conversely, following this loss, the Dolphins are set to face the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, braving the anticipated freezing conditions. Should Miami aim to secure its first playoff victory in 23 years, they’ll need to overcome the challenge posed by two-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes.
