Beyoncé sent shockwaves through the internet once again with the surprise release of her eighth studio album, “Cowboy Carter,” last night. However, the superstar singer revealed that her original plan was to release “Cowboy Carter” before “Renaissance,” the first installment of a trilogy of albums that debuted in 2022. The global pandemic prompted her to alter her plans, recognizing the need for lighter, more uplifting music during such challenging times.
In a press release, Beyoncé disclosed that “Cowboy Carter” had been in the works for over five years, allowing her the time and space to craft the album with meticulous care. Each of the 27 tracks on the album draws inspiration from various Western films, with Beyoncé immersing herself in the cinematic experience during the recording process. Films like “Five Fingers For Marseilles,” “Urban Cowboy,” “The Hateful Eight,” and others served as source material, influencing the album’s sound and themes.
Beyoncé’s creative process involved experimentation and exploration, resulting in the recording of approximately 100 songs before distilling them down to the final tracklist. She incorporated elements of country, blues, and Black folk music, utilizing real instrumentation such as the accordion, washboard, and pedal steel guitar. Notably, she employed her nails as percussion instruments, drawing inspiration from Dolly Parton’s iconic use of nails while recording “9 to 5.”
The character of Cowboy Carter, central to the album’s narrative, pays homage to the original Black cowboys of the American West. Beyoncé aimed to reclaim the term “cowboy,” historically used to diminish former slaves, and highlight the strength and resilience of these men.
“Carter” boasts an impressive lineup of collaborators, although credits were not initially included in the album’s release. Notable musicians such as The-Dream, Pharrell Williams, and Jay-Z, among others, contributed to the project, infusing it with their unique talents and perspectives. Additionally, the album features guest appearances from legendary artists like Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and Stevie Wonder, further elevating its significance.
In Beyoncé’s eyes, “Cowboy Carter” represents her most exceptional work to date, defying expectations while delivering an immersive and unforgettable musical experience. She believes that listeners will be pleasantly surprised by the album’s content, affirming that it stands as a testament to her evolution as an artist.
