Beth and Rich Correll, renowned directors whose letters supporting Brian Peck in his court case against Drake Bell were revealed in the recent documentary “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” are issuing a heartfelt apology to Drake Bell and his family.
In an exclusive statement to Variety, the Corrells expressed their deepest apologies to Bell and his loved ones, acknowledging the pain and trauma caused by their past actions. They expressed profound regret for advocating leniency for someone they later learned had committed a horrific crime.
“If we had known the truth at the time the letters were written, we never would have written them,” the Corrells stated. “There are no words to express how awful we feel for being on the wrong side of a horrific situation and the trauma it caused you, Drake. We are devastated that we unwittingly supported the unsupportable.”
The couple emphasized their commitment to prioritizing the safety of children, both on and off set, and emphasized the importance of creating a safe environment for all individuals, especially minors. They expressed solidarity with Bell, commending his bravery in coming forward and expressing hope for his healing process.
Beth and Rich Correll have extensive experience in the entertainment industry, having worked on popular kids’ shows such as “The Amanda Show,” “All That,” and “Drake & Josh.” However, their involvement in supporting Peck, who was convicted of sexual abuse, has drawn criticism and prompted reflection on their past actions.
In the documentary, Bell revealed for the first time that he was the minor who accused acting coach Brian Peck of sexual abuse. Peck’s arrest and subsequent conviction led to public scrutiny of those who supported him, including Beth and Rich Correll.
Following the documentary’s release, Nickelodeon issued a statement expressing support for Bell and affirming its commitment to fostering a safe and professional workplace environment. The network also addressed allegations against producer Dan Schneider, stating its dedication to investigating formal complaints and ensuring a safe environment for all employees and cast members.
Bell, however, expressed skepticism towards Nickelodeon’s statements, highlighting the need for tangible actions to address the trauma he endured. He emphasized the importance of genuine care and support from the network, beyond mere statements.
As the industry grapples with revelations of past misconduct and the need for accountability, Beth and Rich Correll’s apology serves as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging past mistakes and working towards meaningful change. Their statement reflects a commitment to accountability, empathy, and the well-being of those affected by their actions.
