Mitzi Gaynor, the iconic dancer and actress renowned for her portrayal of Nellie Forbush in the 1958 film adaptation of South Pacific, has passed away at the age of 93. Gaynor died of natural causes on Thursday morning in Los Angeles, as confirmed by her longtime managers, Rene Reyes and Shane Rosamonda.

Gaynor, one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s golden age of musicals, captivated audiences with her vibrant performances and exceptional vocal talent. In South Pacific, she delivered memorable renditions of classic songs, including “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” and “Some Enchanted Evening.” The film itself received three Academy Award nominations and won for Best Sound, while Gaynor was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress.
Throughout her illustrious career, Gaynor collaborated with some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Gene Kelly. Her filmography boasts appearances in notable musicals such as We’re Not Married alongside Ginger Rogers, There’s No Business Like Show Business with Marilyn Monroe, and The Birds and the Bees featuring David Niven.
In addition to her film success, Gaynor redefined her career as a performing entertainer, showcasing her talents in live performances across the United States, Canada, England, and Australia. Under the management of her husband, Jack Bean, she starred in her own musical revue, earning top billing in prestigious venues from Las Vegas to Broadway.
Gaynor’s contributions to the entertainment industry extended beyond the silver screen. In 2008, she won an Emmy Award for the television special Mitzi Gaynor: Razzle Dazzle! The Special Years, further solidifying her legacy as a versatile performer.
In a heartfelt statement, Reyes and Rosamonda expressed gratitude for the love and support Gaynor received throughout her life. “As we celebrate her legacy, we offer our thanks to her friends and fans and the countless audiences she entertained throughout her long life,” they said.
