Baidu AI Cloud is set to integrate its advanced Ernie chatbot into Samsung’s latest Galaxy S24 smartphones, offering users real-time translation capabilities and enhanced AI-powered features. Ernie, comparable to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, utilizes artificial intelligence to generate human-like responses based on user prompts.
Samsung’s Galaxy S24 lineup, introduced last week, emphasizes AI-powered functionalities as the tech giant aims to compete with rival smartphones, including Apple’s latest iPhones, by leveraging cutting-edge technology.
The collaboration will enable Ernie’s understanding and generation capabilities to enhance Samsung’s Note Assistant. Users can benefit from real-time translation during calls and have Ernie summarize lengthy content into organized formats with a single click, streamlining the handling of extensive text.
While Apple dominated the Chinese smartphone market in 2023, capturing the largest market share, Samsung aims to make significant strides with AI integration in its Galaxy S24 devices. Baidu’s Ernie 4.0, launched in October, is touted as the most powerful version of the Ernie foundation model, equipped with advanced capabilities in understanding, generation, reasoning, and memory.
Baidu’s CEO, Robin Li, claimed that Ernie 4.0 is on par with OpenAI’s GPT-4 model, showcasing substantial improvements over its online predecessor. The Ernie bot achieved over 100 million users within four months of its public release, positioning Baidu in competition with Tencent’s Hunyuan and Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen in the generative AI space in China.
Despite recent challenges, including reports of a cyberwarfare test on Ernie, Baidu remains a key player in the AI landscape. As IDC forecasts an integration of more AI functions into personal devices, including smartphones, Baidu’s collaboration with Samsung highlights the growing importance of AI in consumer electronics.
