Back to the Future turns 40 this year, and to mark the milestone, the film was re-released in theaters. The re-release happened around Halloween and had a strong opening day at the North American box office. It earned $1.56 million on Friday across 2,290 theaters, including $650,000 from Thursday previews. This is higher than the opening-day total of Toy Story’s re-release, but a bit behind Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Endgame.

The sci-fi classic, directed by Robert Zemeckis, stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, and Thomas F. Wilson. Back to the Future was followed by two sequels and grew into a huge franchise with video games, theme park rides, an animated show, and even a stage musical.

With its re-release, the film ranks 7th among major recent Hollywood re-releases. It’s expected to earn between $3.5 million and $4.5 million over the three-day weekend. Overseas, it has made $780,000, bringing the worldwide total to $2.3 million from the re-release. Combining this with its original run, Back to the Future has now earned $216.1 million in North America and $386.6 million worldwide.
