Attorney General Merrick Garland delivered a forceful defense of the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to neutrality amidst mounting political attacks and threats. Speaking to DOJ staff, Garland declared that the department would not be used as a “political weapon,” addressing concerns raised by former President Donald Trump and his allies who have accused the DOJ of political bias in its investigations.
In an emotional address, Garland reaffirmed the DOJ’s promise to resist political interference and ensure that law enforcement operates without bending to political pressures. “We will not allow this nation to become a country where law enforcement is treated as an apparatus of politics,” Garland said. He underscored that the department’s norms are designed to prevent any political influence from affecting its criminal investigations.
The remarks came in response to Trump’s ongoing criticisms, alleging that the DOJ is targeting him as part of a Biden-directed scheme. Trump faces multiple criminal charges, including efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and the alleged mishandling of classified documents. Garland’s comments also followed Trump’s inflammatory social media posts, where he threatened severe consequences for those he claims are involved in election-related misconduct.
Garland condemned the recent escalation of conspiracy theories and falsehoods targeting the DOJ, describing them as “dangerous” and an affront to public servants. He highlighted the increase in threats against election officials and DOJ personnel, stressing the importance of protecting the rights of Americans to peacefully express their opinions without resorting to violence.
As the 2024 election approaches, Garland emphasized that federal prosecutors and agents must avoid any actions that could impact election outcomes or favor particular candidates. His defense of the DOJ comes at a critical juncture, with political tensions and public scrutiny at an all-time high.
