Are the Dolphins preparing for life After Tua Tagovailoa? Miami’s QB plans raise questions

Over the past few seasons, Tua Tagovailoa has quietly become one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks—whether his critics want to admit it or not.

In 2022, he led the league in passer rating and touchdown percentage, proving he could go toe-to-toe with the best. The following year, he threw for an NFL-high 4,624 yards and earned a Pro Bowl nod. At just 27 years old, there’s still room for him to grow.

But there’s one major concern that keeps hanging over his career—injuries.

Tagovailoa has already suffered three diagnosed concussions since entering the league, and some believe the actual number is higher. His injury history stretches back to his college days at Alabama, where he endured a brutal 2019 season that included a dislocated hip, broken nose, fractured posterior wall, and a concussion.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise that the Miami Dolphins are doing their homework on quarterbacks in the upcoming NFL Draft. According to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald, the team recently had dinner with Texas QB Quinn Ewers, one of the more intriguing prospects in this year’s class.

“The Dolphins have been spending time with quarterbacks in this draft class, including a dinner with Texas’ Quinn Ewers,” Jackson reported.

Ewers isn’t in the same tier as top prospects like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders, but he’s got potential. He threw for 3,472 yards and 31 touchdowns last season and even set a record for most passing yards in a Big 12 Championship Game, where he was named MVP.

This revelation naturally raises questions about Miami’s confidence in Tagovailoa. Are they considering a long-term replacement, worried that his injury history could cut his career short? Or is this just a move to ensure they have a capable backup?

Right now, the Dolphins’ QB depth chart isn’t exactly reassuring. Their current backup, Zach Wilson—once the No. 2 overall pick—has struggled mightily since entering the league. If Tua misses time again, Miami needs a solid Plan B.

Whether this is a routine scouting move or a sign of bigger concerns, one thing is clear—the Dolphins are keeping their options open at quarterback.
