Apple is gearing up for another fall keynote, expected to take place in October. A highly awaited announcement is the update of the iMac lineup. While rumors have been circulating about various new features, here are four significant upgrades that we can expect from Apple’s next iMac.
M4 Chip: Boost in Performance
The next iMac is expected to come with the new M4 chip, a major upgrade from the M3 that was introduced last October. Based on TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, the M4 chip will feature a 10-core CPU, delivering an estimated 20-25% performance gain compared to the M3’s 8-core CPU. This improvement should provide a significant boost for users requiring more power for tasks like video editing, graphic design, and other resource-intensive activities.
USB-C Magic Accessories
Apple is set to transition all of its new devices from the proprietary Lightning port to USB-C by the end of this year, following European regulations. This change will probably apply to the accessories included with the new iMac, such as the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad, which are all anticipated to support USB-C compatibility.
Additional Unified Memory
Reports indicate that all Macs powered by the M4 chip will come with a minimum of 16GB of RAM, a significant jump from previous models that started at 8GB. The M4 iMac is expected to follow suit, offering 16GB of unified memory across the board, with an option to upgrade to 32GB for more demanding users. This is a noticeable improvement, especially for those who multitask or use memory-intensive software.
More Thunderbolt Ports
The current 24″ iMac models offer either two or four ports, depending on the configuration. However, the next iMac models might feature four Thunderbolt ports across the higher-end models. This increase in Thunderbolt controllers on the M4 chip could enable users to connect more high-speed peripherals without using adapters or hubs.
While these updates are exciting, it’s worth noting that Apple has yet to announce any plans for larger iMac models or an iMac Pro. At this time, the 24″ iMac is the sole option available, with users seeking a larger display advised to connect a Mac to a Studio Display.
Wrap Up
The upcoming iMac refresh offers several notable improvements, including the M4 chip, enhanced memory, USB-C accessories, and additional Thunderbolt ports. While the upgrades may not be groundbreaking, they will provide a more seamless and powerful user experience for those in the market for a new iMac.
