Apple enthusiasts can now preorder the highly anticipated Vision Pro headset, priced at $3,499, ahead of its scheduled release on February 2. This debut in spatial computing marks a significant move for Apple into a new product category, the first since the introduction of the Apple Watch in 2015.
The Vision Pro is not expected to match the sales volumes of Apple’s flagship products like the iPhone, Apple Watch, and Mac, especially during its initial launch. Analysts, including Erik Woodring from Morgan Stanley, emphasize that the long-term potential of the Vision Pro is crucial for its success.
According to estimates by David Vogt from UBS, Apple could generate approximately $1.4 billion in revenue from the Vision Pro in 2024, with the assumption of shipping around 400,000 units. For context, Apple reported $43.81 billion in iPhone revenue during its fiscal fourth quarter.
The entry-level Vision Pro, equipped with 256GB of storage and Apple’s M2 chip, which is also featured in certain Mac models, is priced at $3,499. Apple is offering higher storage options with a 512GB model for $3,699 and a 1TB variant for $3,899.
The Vision Pro provides users with a “spatial computing” experience, acting as a versatile headset that supports virtual reality displays for activities like watching movies. Users can also pin multiple apps and screens within their field of view while maintaining awareness of their surroundings.
Apple’s preorder process encourages customers to use an iPhone or iPad with Face ID to determine the best-fitting size for their Vision Pro. The company is facilitating a 12-month financing plan, with the $3,499 model available for $291.58 per month. Additionally, Apple is offering prescription lens inserts as an optional accessory for $149.
The Vision Pro was initially unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in 2023, showcasing the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and entering the spatial computing landscape. As Apple expands its product portfolio, the Vision Pro is poised to contribute to the evolution of immersive and interactive experiences for users.
