Apple is creating its first low-cost laptop to take on Chromebooks and affordable Windows PCs. The new model, called “J700” for now, marks Apple’s move into a market it hasn’t explored before, one focused on budget-conscious users.
This laptop is being designed mainly for students, office workers, and people who use their devices for simple tasks like browsing the internet, writing documents, or doing light photo and video edits. Apple also hopes to attract iPad buyers who want a more traditional laptop feel instead of a touchscreen tablet.
The device is currently being tested and has entered early production with Apple’s overseas suppliers. If everything goes as planned, Apple expects to launch the new budget Mac in the first half of 2026.
This could be a big step for the company, giving more people access to the Apple ecosystem at a lower price point.
