Apple has rolled out a major update to its Notes app with iOS 18, introducing a built-in audio recording feature that automatically generates transcripts of voice notes. This new functionality, available on iPhone 12 and later models, is designed to streamline note-taking by allowing users to capture both audio and text without the need for third-party apps.
The feature simplifies the process of recording and transcribing audio, making it especially useful for professionals, students, and anyone who relies on voice memos. To access the new functionality, users simply open the Notes app, create a new note, or select an existing one. From there, they can tap inside the note and select the paperclip icon in the toolbar above the keyboard. This opens a pop-up menu where users can choose the “Record Audio” option.
Once selected, users can start and stop recording by tapping the red record button, which is prominently displayed within the interface. When the recording is complete, the audio is automatically embedded within the note, and users can view the transcript by tapping the quote bubble icon located in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
Apple’s decision to integrate audio recording and transcription directly into the Notes app is part of its broader effort to enhance productivity and efficiency across its software ecosystem. This feature allows users to seamlessly switch between capturing audio and reviewing text, without the hassle of switching between apps or manually typing out notes.
The addition of audio transcription in iOS 18 signals Apple’s commitment to making its devices more versatile for everyday users, and is expected to be a popular tool for those seeking an all-in-one solution for note-taking, brainstorming, and meeting documentation. The update is available now, further cementing iOS as a powerful platform for productivity.
