A week after the launch of the highly anticipated iPhone 16 series, reports have emerged from numerous users of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max regarding frustrating touchscreen problems. Many users have experienced intermittent touchscreen issues, characterized by delayed responses and instances where the device fails to register touches altogether. Initial investigations suggest that a software bug, rather than a hardware malfunction, maybe at the root of these problems.
The touchscreen issue appears to be linked to iOS’s touch rejection algorithm, which has reportedly become overly sensitive. This hypersensitivity causes the algorithm to mistakenly dismiss legitimate interactions. For instance, one Reddit user described a scenario where touching the screen near the camera control button results in the display becoming unresponsive until the touch is released, although the home bar remains functional. Such glitches indicate that unintended screen contact is often mistaken for accidental touches, adding to user frustration.
Interestingly, the iPhone 16 Pro’s ultra-slim bezels might exacerbate this issue. Users holding the device without a protective case are more prone to accidental touches near the edges of the screen. Notably, this problem does not seem to manifest when the device is idle on the lock screen; rather, it surfaces during active use, such as navigating apps or swiping through the home screen.
Both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are powered by Apple’s new A18 Pro chipset, which boasts a 6-core CPU featuring two performance cores and four efficiency cores. Alongside a 6-core GPU, the A18 Pro offers a 15% speed improvement over its predecessor, the A17 Pro, along with a 17% increase in memory bandwidth. This chipset also enhances ray tracing capabilities, making it twice as efficient as the previous model. Unique to the Pro series, the A18 Pro supports advanced media features, such as ProRes video recording and faster USB 3 transfer speeds, thereby enhancing overall device performance.
Apple has acknowledged the touchscreen issues affecting the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max users and is reportedly working on a fix. Until then, affected users may need to exercise patience as Apple navigates this unexpected setback with its latest devices.
