In an unexpected move, Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway has issued a personal apology to Norwegian journalist Kjersti Flaa, following the resurfacing of a 2012 interview that gained attention for its awkward exchanges. Hathaway, who was promoting her film Les Misérables at the time, reached out to Flaa through a heartfelt email that the journalist described as “so touching.”
Flaa, who recently shared a clip of the interview on social media, expressed her surprise and gratitude for Hathaway’s gesture. “I have to say, I was pretty shocked,” Flaa stated in a video post. Flaa mentioned that she had never expected Hathaway to reach out to her and she was never going to even watch that video, but Anne did and did something pretty amazing.
The interview, which took place during the promotional tour for Les Misérables, showed Hathaway responding with blunt, clipped answers to some of Flaa’s more creative questions. At one point, Flaa suggested singing a question to the actress, to which Hathaway responded with a polite but firm, “Well, I won’t be doing that, but you’re more than welcome to sing.”
Another moment of tension came when Flaa asked if Hathaway believed “love was more passionate” during the time period of Les Misérables. Hathaway’s simple, one-word response of “No” further solidified the interview’s awkward tone.
However, Flaa revealed that Hathaway’s recent apology shed new light on the encounter. The actress reportedly admitted to going through a “tough time” during the interview, explaining her uncharacteristically curt responses. Flaa, deeply moved by Hathaway’s candidness, said the email was “very personal” and that discussing it “almost makes me teary-eyed because I was just so grateful that she did that.”
Hathaway’s gesture of reconciliation has been widely praised, with many seeing it as a testament to her humility and emotional growth. In an industry often characterized by carefully managed images, Hathaway’s decision to reach out personally to Flaa stands out as a genuine and rare moment of vulnerability from a Hollywood star.
