Anne Hathaway is officially stepping back into her tiara as Princess Mia Thermopolis for the highly anticipated third installment of The Princess Diaries franchise. The Academy Award-winning actress, now 41, confirmed her return on Instagram Friday, delighting fans of the beloved royal rom-com.
Return of “The Princess Diaries”
In a playful video, Hathaway posted a screenshot from an article first reported by Variety, confirming the movie’s development. The post also featured memorable moments from the original film, including Hathaway’s iconic “Shut up!” line from the 2001 hit, and was captioned with “Miracles happen,” a nod to the film’s soundtrack.
This announcement marks the latest update for The Princess Diaries 3, which has been in development since 2022. Hathaway first landed the role of the awkward high schooler-turned-royal at just 17, a breakout performance that catapulted her to stardom. The original film, directed by the late Garry Marshall, was a box office success, grossing over $165 million worldwide, with a sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, released in 2004.
While Hathaway teased the development earlier this year, telling V Magazine in April that the project was “in a good place,” fans had eagerly awaited confirmation of her return. “There’s nothing to announce yet,” she said at the time while also mentioning that they were in a good place. Now with the announcement, her place in the movie-series is solidified.
Variety also reported that Adele Lim, the writer of Crazy Rich Asians, is set to direct the prequel, a continuation of the saga that follows Princess Mia’s royal journey in the fictional kingdom of Genovia. However, it remains unclear whether other key stars, such as Julie Andrews, who played Queen Clarisse Renaldi, will reprise their roles.
With Hathaway back in the royal spotlight, The Princess Diaries 3 is set to rekindle the magic of the franchise that has charmed audiences for over two decades. Further details, including the release date, are yet to be announced, but fans of the series can now rest assured that the story of Genovia’s favorite princess will continue.
