Even years after their split, fans still remember Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone as one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples. Garfield, promoting his latest project We Live in Time with Florence Pugh, opened up a little about his past relationship with Stone, though carefully and indirectly.
During an interview with Esquire, Garfield was asked about a persistent rumor that their real-life romance inspired Stone’s character in La La Land. He gently dismissed it, saying, “I guess people need something to believe.” He didn’t confirm or deny the connection, adding, “I have never, and I won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone.” His response left fans speculating, but also respected his privacy.
For context, Garfield and Stone first met on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man in 2011. Their on-screen chemistry soon became a real-life romance, which continued through the sequel. They parted ways in 2015, but small gestures, like a wooden chair Garfield reportedly made for Stone, still capture fans’ imaginations. Social media often revives their story, with melancholic edits and comparisons to La La Land scenes keeping the nostalgia alive.
Looking ahead, Garfield has a busy schedule. He will appear in Luca Guadagnino’s After The Hunt, a big-screen adaptation of Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree, and the Sam Altman biopic Artificial. Emma Stone also has exciting projects lined up, including Ari Aster’s Eddington and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia.
Even though their romance is in the past, the legacy of Garfield and Stone’s relationship continues to intrigue fans—and the subtle ways Garfield talks about it only add to the fascination.
