The Gilmore Girls alum, who played Emily Malek (formerly known as Ofglen) from 2017 to 2021, recently shared with The Hollywood Reporter that the emotional weight of the role became too much to carry.
“It was deeply upsetting to even imagine Emily going through something like that, being captured, powerless, with no say over her body,” Bledel said, adding that she stepped away after much reflection. “I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time,” she previously told E! News in 2022.
A Role That Cut Close to the Bone
In The Handmaid’s Tale, Bledel’s character endures some of the most harrowing experiences on the show. Once a university professor and loving mother, Emily is criminalized for being in a same-sex relationship. Under Gilead’s brutal regime, she is stripped of her identity, renamed Ofglen, subjected to genital mutilation, and banished to the Colonies. Her journey includes both deep trauma and righteous vengeance, making her arc unforgettable—and excruciating to portray.
Bledel said the role gripped her from the start.
“When I read the pilot script, I immediately said yes,” she recalled. “Somehow, Bruce [Miller, showrunner] just knew I had Ofglen in me.”
But embodying Emily’s trauma took a toll on her mental well-being. Bledel’s decision to exit wasn’t abrupt—it was a self-preservation move after years of portraying pain, silence, and rebellion under oppressive systems.
She Wasn’t Alone in the Struggle
Bledel’s co-star Samira Wiley, who plays Moira, has also spoken candidly about the emotional toll the show took. In an April interview with Parade during the Season 6 premiere, Wiley said she was “finished with the show and the trauma that came with it.”
To stay grounded, Wiley leaned on mindfulness and meditation techniques. She even advises fans of the show to be gentle with themselves, especially if they’re binge-watching:
“This is not a casual viewing experience,” she said. “Take care of your mental health.”
A Quiet Exit, A Loud Statement
Bledel’s departure was subtle—no dramatic send-off or controversy, just a thoughtful choice to step away from a role that had begun to hurt more than it healed. While fans were sad to see her go, her honesty and vulnerability have added another layer of respect for the Emmy-winning actress.
