A Game of Thrones prequel focused on Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros is making progress. The project has been talked about since early 2023. Back then, reports said HBO was considering a new series based on that part of George R. R. Martin’s world. Now, nearly a year later, writer and filmmaker Mattson Tomlin has shared new updates that suggest the show is moving ahead.
Tomlin has been brought on to develop the show with HBO. He is known for working on big projects like The Batman and is also co-writing its sequel. Though he was not officially credited for the first film, his involvement with major titles gives the new prequel some weight.
Tomlin recently took to social media to talk to fans about the show. While waiting for a flight, he was asked questions about the series. When asked if George R. R. Martin is involved, Tomlin confirmed that he is. Another fan asked how much writing he has done so far. Tomlin answered with one word, “LOTS.” This suggests the script is already well underway.
When someone asked what scene he was most excited to see on screen, Tomlin simply said, “The opening scene.” This short answer still shows his enthusiasm and creative vision for how the story will begin.
In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tomlin talked more about working with Martin. He said meeting the author felt like hearing from a higher power. He described Martin as the ultimate guide, someone who always has the right answer when it comes to the world of Westeros. Tomlin also shared that his approach to the show was to make the story feel personal and real. That mindset is what helped him land the job. At the time of the interview, he was still writing the pilot and staying in regular contact with Martin.
Even with all these updates, HBO has not yet confirmed the show for production. There is no official release date or green light from the network. But Tomlin’s comments and Martin’s involvement show that the series is actively being developed. Fans will need to wait for more news, but this early look behind the scenes is a hopeful sign for what’s to come.
