Adobe has offered a preview of its upcoming generative AI tools for video production, showcasing a significant enhancement to its Firefly AI platform. In a recent teaser, Adobe showcased video content generated using text descriptions and still images, offering an early look at what users can expect from its new text-to-video and image-to-video features. These tools, which will be integrated into Adobe’s suite of Creative Cloud applications, promise to simplify video production by automating clip generation and enhancing footage with advanced controls.
The text-to-video feature, which Adobe announced earlier this year, allows users to input text descriptions and generate video clips. The preview also revealed options for simulating camera angles, motion, and shot distance, enabling users to customize the generated footage. Similarly, the image-to-video feature demonstrated in the Firefly video model will enable users to turn static images into dynamic video content. Adobe suggests that this could be particularly advantageous for addressing production gaps or generating supplementary B-roll footage.
Despite the promising capabilities, the current duration of the generated videos is capped at five seconds. Alexandru Costin, Adobe’s VP of generative AI, confirmed that videos produced by both the text-to-video and image-to-video tools are limited in length for now. This is comparable to OpenAI’s Sora model, though Adobe is exploring Sora as a third-party integration for its Premiere Pro software.
A major benefit of Adobe Firefly is its “commercially safe” guarantee. The AI model has been trained on openly licensed content, public domain media, and Adobe Stock imagery, significantly reducing the risk of copyright issues. This could position Adobe favourably as legal debates over AI-generated content continue to unfold.
The new text-to-video and image-to-video features are expected to be available in beta later this year as part of the standalone Firefly application. Eventually, these tools will be integrated into Adobe’s Creative Cloud, Experience Cloud, and Adobe Express applications. Moreover, Adobe is working on a “Generative Extend” feature for Premiere Pro. This tool will enable users to lengthen existing video footage in a way akin to the Generative Expand feature in Photoshop, which extends image backgrounds.
