The teachers of Abbott Elementary are leaving the classroom behind for a field trip like no other, straight to a Philadelphia Phillies game. On August 28, the cast was spotted filming a Season 5 episode at Citizens Bank Park, giving fans a first look at one of the show’s most exciting outings yet.
This special episode was first teased back in July at San Diego Comic-Con, when creator and star Quinta Brunson hinted that the new season would include a “live event” tied to Philadelphia sports. Fans immediately started speculating about whether the show might head to an Eagles game, a Flyers match, or even a Phillies ballgame. Now the mystery is solved.
The Phillies’ beloved mascot, the Phillie Phanatic, shared photos from the big day on social media, including a group shot of the cast on the field. Lisa Ann Walter even threw out a first pitch earlier that week, while Brunson was seen snapping pictures with Phillies left fielder Kyle Schwarber.
From the cast photo, we know that Brunson, Walter, Tyler James Williams, Chris Perfetti, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, Matthew Law, and William Stanford Davis were all on hand to film the episode. While plot details are still under wraps, Brunson confirmed at Comic-Con that this will be one of the earlier episodes in the new season, so fans won’t have to wait long to see it.
Major League Baseball Studios also revealed they played a role in making the crossover happen. “As big fans of the series, MLB Studios initiated outreach to Warner Brothers and subsequently the Phillies to get the shooting process started,” the company said in a statement. They explained the goal was to create a true “bottle episode” inside the ballpark, with authentic touches and full access to the field.
Between the real Phillies setting, the presence of the Phanatic, and the cast fully in game-day mode, this episode promises to give fans an immersive experience that blends the world of Abbott Elementary with Philly pride.
Season 5 of Abbott Elementary premieres Wednesday, October 1 at 8:30/7:30c on ABC.
