How Does the Shield Work?

The air curtain produced by the device blocks 99.8% of aerosols, including viruses. The air is pre-treated to kill any viruses present, enhancing the protection to nearly 100%. The technology is housed in a 10-pound backpack, which includes:

  • Battery: Powers the system.
  • Electronics: Controls the device’s operations.
  • Air Handling System: Manages the airflow.
  • Nonthermal Plasma Module: Generates ionized gas at low temperatures to kill airborne viruses before they reach the air curtain.

Real-World Testing of the Shield

Currently, the Worker Wearable Protection Device is being tested at Michigan Turkey Producers, a poultry-processing plant. Workers in this environment face constant risks from respiratory viruses. Traditional paper masks have proven problematic—causing communication issues, fogging up safety goggles, and failing to maintain a consistent seal. The new device addresses these issues while providing superior protection.

Looking to the Future

While the current model is intended for industrial use, Taza Aya, the company commercializing the technology, is developing a smaller, consumer-friendly version. CEO Alberto Elli is enthusiastic about the technology’s potential and anticipates a consumer launch in 2025.
