Benedict Cumberbatch leads The Roses, a dark comedy about love, resentment, and messy relationships. The movie updates Warren Adler’s 1981 novel and the 1989 film The War of the Roses for a modern audience. It also stars Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa, Allison Janney, and more.

The film earned a modest $51.4 million worldwide against a $30 million budget. It opened at number five in theaters behind Weapons, the 50th anniversary re-release of Jaws, Caught Stealing, and Freakier Friday. Critics were mixed, giving it a 65% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In comparison, the original War of the Roses earned $160 million on a $26 million budget and holds an 84% rating. The 1989 version also received three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture.

The Roses’ box office totals break down to $15.2 million in North America and $36.2 million internationally. While the reception was milder than the original, the film is now getting a second chance with streaming. Disney confirmed that it will be available on Hulu and the Hulu on Disney+ bundle starting November 20. This release gives viewers who missed it in theaters a chance to watch Cumberbatch and Colman bring their sharp, tense dynamic to life.
