The sports and online entertainment community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Cody “Beef” Franke, a beloved Barstool Sports personality known for his humor, warmth, and passion for golf. At just 31, Cody’s sudden passing has left fans, colleagues, and friends in deep shock.
According to Barstool Sports, Cody passed away over the weekend while attending a wedding in the Dominican Republic. His colleague Dan “Big Cat” Katz broke the news during The Yak podcast on October 27, 2025, calling it a “devastating” moment for the entire Barstool family. The company later confirmed that Cody’s death was the result of a “sudden medical issue.” While no further details have been shared yet, Barstool noted that more information will be released once it becomes available.
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy paid tribute to Cody in a heartfelt post, writing, “It’s hard to even process it right now. Just another cruel reminder that tomorrow is never promised. Live each day to its fullest.”
Cody, who had joined Barstool Sports in March 2025, quickly became a fan favourite on the Fore Play podcast, where he shared golf content, participated in challenges, and often brought lighthearted humour to the show. His co-hosts described the past few days as “tough for the entire Barstool family,” remembering him as someone who brought joy, positivity, and laughter wherever he went.
Fans and colleagues flooded social media with tributes celebrating Cody’s kindness and authenticity. One user wrote, “Beef was truly one of the best people Barstool could’ve hired. He was the nicest person and the best coworker. I feel grateful I ever got to be in his presence.” Another fan recalled his trademark manners, saying, “‘Beef’ taking his cap off whenever he met someone and shook their hand will always be remembered. Just an all-around genuine and respectful man.”
Before joining Barstool, Cody had already built an impressive career as a PGA of America Golf Professional. He worked for nearly a decade as the head pro at Thornberry Creek Club in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, where he was known for calling himself “the common instructor for the common golfer.” His teaching style was easygoing and relatable, helping everyday golfers improve their game while enjoying it.
Cody was a two-time PGA Section Award winner, recognised for both his teaching skills and his dedication to his students. He also built a strong following online, with close to 50,000 Instagram followers who loved his golf tutorials and down-to-earth approach.
Though little is publicly known about his personal life, it is confirmed that Cody is survived by his brother, Craig, who often played golf alongside him.
