Cillian Murphy has put an end to the rumors about him playing Voldemort in the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series. The Oppenheimer star confirmed on Josh Horowitz’s podcast Happy Sad Confused that he will not be taking on the iconic role, originally played by Ralph Fiennes.

Murphy joked about how his kids occasionally try to get him to watch the Wizarding World movies, but he hasn’t done it yet. He also praised Fiennes, calling him “an absolute acting legend” and saying it would be hard for anyone to fill his shoes. When the host teased that playing Voldemort might mean losing his “beautiful nose,” Murphy quipped that he’s very attached to it.

The first season of the new series is currently in production in England and will cover Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone over eight episodes. Fans shouldn’t expect Voldemort to appear just yet, as the character doesn’t show up until the climax of the fourth book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Dominic McLaughlin has been cast as Harry, while Nick Frost will play Hagrid. Other confirmed cast members include Arabella Stanton, Alastair Stout, John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, and Katherine Parkinson. The series is expected to stream in early 2027.
