With just three games left in the 2025 regular season, the Philadelphia Phillies have already secured a postseason bye and are preparing for the NLDS, likely against the New York Mets or Los Angeles Dodgers. While most of the lineup and rotation are set, the back end of the bullpen remains a key question, and that’s where Walker Buehler could play a role.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson recently addressed Buehler’s chances of making the postseason roster. “He’s in a real good position right now,” Thomson said, emphasizing the importance of Buehler being healthy and commanding his fastball. “He can get right-handed hitters out.” That comment suggests Buehler is likely to be included on the roster and could be used in multiple ways depending on matchups.
While Cristopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo, and Ranger Suarez are expected to start in the NLDS, Buehler could serve as a long reliever or spot starter. His role could expand in the NLCS or World Series depending on how Aaron Nola finishes the season. Thomson hinted that Buehler might see action specifically against right-handed-heavy lineups, either as a reliever or an opener, giving the Phillies flexibility in how they deploy their pitching staff.
Buehler’s recent performances make him a strong option. In his last three outings, he allowed just one run across 13.2 innings, posting a 0.66 ERA. His experience in high-pressure games, including helping close out the Dodgers’ 2024 World Series championship, adds a veteran presence the Phillies can rely on in October.
Though the exact structure of the Phillies’ postseason rotation and bullpen is still undecided, Buehler’s versatility gives manager Rob Thomson options. Whether used in relief or as a starter, he could be a key piece in Philadelphia’s push for back-to-back championships.
