Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce has been fined almost fifteen thousand dollars by the NFL. The fine came after he made an inappropriate gesture during the Chiefs’ game against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 14 at Arrowhead Stadium.
The moment happened after Kelce caught a 23-yard pass. As he ran along the Eagles’ sideline, he made a motion toward his groin area. The gesture was quickly caught on video and spread across social media, drawing attention from fans and the league.
Kelce later described the move as a playful “huevos” reference from the baseball movie Major League. But the NFL saw it differently. Even though referees on the field missed it, the league reviewed the footage and ruled it as unsportsmanlike conduct. That led to a $14,491 fine.
The fine comes at a rough time for both Kelce and the Chiefs. In that game, he caught four passes for 61 yards but did not score a touchdown. The Chiefs went on to lose 20-17 to the Eagles, adding to their early-season struggles. They also lost their opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, leaving them 0-2.
The NFL has been warning players this season to avoid taunting and inappropriate celebrations. Officials are being told to pay closer attention, and Kelce’s action fell under that crackdown. The 35-year-old tight end can appeal the fine if he wants.
This is not the first time Kelce has been in the spotlight for controversy. During his college career, he faced disciplinary issues, though many rumors about him since then have turned out false. Still, the league’s punishment adds another mark to his history of headline-making moments.
Kelce talked about the team’s struggles on his podcast New Heights, which he co-hosts with his brother Jason Kelce. He admitted he needed to take more responsibility as a leader, especially after the Chiefs’ slow start. He said the team had to be better and that he personally was not prepared enough on the opening drive against the Chargers.
Meanwhile, in the same game, Eagles running back Saquon Barkley was also fined, though for a much bigger amount. He was docked more than forty-six thousand dollars for lowering his helmet before making contact with Chiefs safety Chamarri Conner.
The Chiefs, who were aiming for a strong start after falling short of a third straight championship, now face heavy pressure. Fans are hoping stars like Kelce can refocus and help turn the season around.
