Freakier Friday has finally arrived in theaters, nearly twenty years after the original film charmed audiences. The sequel brings back Lindsay Lohan as Anna, now in her 30s and navigating life as a single mother to her teenage daughter, Harper, played by Julia Butters. Jamie Lee Curtis also returns as Tess Coleman, and once again, the mother-daughter duo find themselves tangled in a magical body-swap situation. This time, however, the story expands, with Harper and her friend Lily also experiencing a switch, doubling the chaos and the comedy.
While the movie stays true to the quirky humor of the original, it also ventures into new territory by blending romance into the narrative. Anna’s budding relationship with Eric, portrayed by Manny Jacinto, gives the film an added emotional layer as it explores her journey of love, parenthood, and rediscovering herself.
The climax of Freakier Friday is where emotions run high. After multiple body swaps, Anna is stuck in her mother’s body, Tess is in Anna’s, Harper is in Lily’s, and Lily is in Harper’s. The four come together to confront each other, openly addressing their misunderstandings and frustrations. But even after their heartfelt conversation, the magical fix does not immediately occur.
Things spiral further when Harper, still in Lily’s body, tries to play along at Anna’s wedding rehearsal lunch, hoping to sway Eric’s decision about remarriage. Meanwhile, Lily calls Jake, stirring up suspicions of infidelity and creating more chaos at the event. This leads Anna and Harper to walk out and attend Ella’s concert, where the emotional turning point of the film takes place.
In the final scenes, Anna and Harper take the stage to perform a heartfelt ballad together. Their genuine connection and love for each other trigger the magic, allowing everyone to return to their rightful bodies. In a fitting conclusion, Eric arrives at the concert and declares from the crowd that he still wants to marry Anna. The film ends on a joyful note as the two exchange vows surrounded by loved ones.
Alongside Lohan, Curtis, and Jacinto, the cast also features Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Chad Michael Murray, and Stephen Tobolowsky, adding to the film’s nostalgic yet fresh appeal. With its mix of comedy, heartfelt family moments, and romance, Freakier Friday manages to balance familiarity with new energy, making it a fun return for fans of the original. The film is now running successfully in theaters.
