American thrash metal icons Megadeth have announced that they will release one final album and go on a farewell tour in 2026. The band’s founder and frontman, Dave Mustaine, shared the news on August 14, marking the end of Megadeth’s 40-year career.
Mustaine reflected on the milestone, saying that most musicians don’t get to retire on their own terms. “Most of them don’t get to go out on their own terms on top, and that’s where I’m at in my life right now,” he said. He added that saying goodbye to their fans is the hardest part, noting the millions of supporters the band has gained over the decades.
Details about the final album, including its title and release date, as well as the full list of tour dates, have not been revealed yet. Mustaine described the timing as perfect, encouraging fans to celebrate with the band over the next few years. “Don’t be mad, don’t be sad, be happy for us all, come celebrate with me,” he wrote.
Mustaine also spoke about Megadeth’s impact on the world of metal. He credited the band with shaping a musical style, inspiring countless guitarists, and influencing generations of fans. “We started a musical style, we started a revolution, we changed the guitar world and how it’s played, and we changed the world,” he said.
The announcement came after a teaser from the band on August 13 that read, “The end is near…,” sparking fan speculation. Formed in 1983 after Mustaine left Metallica, Megadeth quickly became one of thrash metal’s most influential bands. Their debut album, Killing Is My Business…and Business Is Good!, released in 1985, launched a career that included multiple platinum records, Grammy wins, and sold-out tours worldwide.
