Sophie Turner is gearing up to return to the big screen in the upcoming gothic horror film The Dreadful. The Game of Thrones star is reuniting with her former co-star Kit Harington, who once played her half-brother on the hit series. This time, however, the duo are paired as romantic leads—a casting choice that brought unexpected challenges.
During a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Turner opened up about just how awkward it was to film an intimate scene with Harington. “We were both retching,” she confessed, describing a kiss scene that left them both feeling queasy.
Turner explained that when she first got the script for The Dreadful, she immediately thought of Harington for the role. “I sent it to Kit, and he said, ‘It’s a great script, but it’s going to be weird for us to play lovers,’” she recalled. At first, Turner didn’t fully grasp his concern, but then she realized the story involved multiple romantic scenes—kissing and more—with someone she had spent years portraying as a brother on-screen. “Oh shoot, that’s my brother,” she said.
Despite the discomfort, both decided the script was too good to pass up. But when filming the first kissing scene, the reality hit: “It was vile. Really, the worst. Another really bad moment in my career,” Turner admitted.
Written and directed by Natasha Kermani, The Dreadful also stars Marcia Gay Harden, Laurence O’Fuarain, and Jonathan Howard. While the release date is still under wraps, fans are already buzzing about seeing Turner and Harington together again—albeit in a very different dynamic from their Game of Thrones days.
Turner’s candidness about the challenges of acting opposite someone you once played family with gives a hilarious—and slightly shocking—peek behind the scenes of Hollywood.
