Tyne Daly is shedding light on why she wasn’t part of her brother Tim Daly’s wedding to Téa Leoni last month. The longtime couple, who starred together on Madam Secretary, exchanged vows on July 12 in an intimate ceremony held at their apartment in New York.

Speaking with PEOPLE at the TV Academy’s inaugural Televerse Festival in Los Angeles on August 16, Tyne explained that the wedding was deliberately small and private. “It was very exclusive, very, very private,” she said, noting that the guest list only included the closest family members. “They only had people that they gave birth to or people who gave birth to them,” she added, clarifying that it was a parents-and-children-only gathering.

Although she wasn’t there for the ceremony, Tyne emphasized that she’ll soon celebrate with her brother and new sister-in-law. The couple is planning a larger event later on to include extended family and friends. In the meantime, Tyne revealed she has been preparing something personal for Leoni. With her former Judging Amy co-star Amy Brenneman by her side, Tyne teased that she has been knitting a Christmas gift for her. “It’s a secret. I can’t tell you what the present is. Nobody likes surprises anymore,” she said with a smile.

Photos from the small ceremony surfaced online shortly after, showing Leoni holding a simple bouquet of white flowers as she posed with her 26-year-old daughter, West Duchovny, whom she shares with ex-husband David Duchovny.

At the festival, Tyne and Brenneman also reflected on reconnecting after years apart. Since Judging Amy ended in 2005, the two admitted they hadn’t kept up with each other as much as they would have liked. “You make all these promises, and then life happens,” Tyne said, recalling how both of them were raising families during their careers. Brenneman, however, noted that their bond remains intact, saying, “It takes about two seconds” to fall back into their friendship.
