Glazing donuts might look fancy, but it’s actually super easy once you know a few tricks. The key is getting the glaze just right, not too thick, not too runny, and knowing when and how to dip.
Start by making your glaze. The simplest version is just powdered sugar mixed with a little liquid. That liquid can be milk, water, or even lemon juice, depending on the flavor you want. Add a splash of vanilla extract for that classic donut shop taste. If you want chocolate glaze, just mix in some cocoa powder and maybe a bit of melted chocolate or vegan butter.
Now mix until it’s smooth. The glaze should look glossy and drip slowly from your spoon. If it’s too thick, add a tiny bit more liquid. If it’s too runny, add more powdered sugar.
Next, make sure your donuts are completely cool before glazing. If they’re too warm, the glaze will melt right off and turn into a mess.
To glaze, gently hold the donut by the edges, flip it upside down, and dip just the top into the glaze. Let the extra drip off for a second, then flip it back over and place it on a wire rack or parchment paper.
If you want that perfect donut-shop look, let the glaze set for a few minutes before eating. It’ll harden into a shiny, sweet coating that’s smooth to the touch.
Want to add toppings like sprinkles, nuts, or coconut? Do it right after dipping, before the glaze sets.
That’s it. Glazing donuts at home can look and taste just as good as the ones from a bakery, and maybe even better.
