The Knicks have had a headline-grabbing offseason, but they’re not quite done building their roster.
After reaching the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in over 20 years, the team made a surprising move by parting ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau. They replaced him with Mike Brown, a well-respected veteran coach who now has the pressure of delivering a championship. But for him to succeed, the front office still needs to tighten up the roster.
Right now, the Knicks’ core looks solid. The entire starting five from last season is returning, and they’ve added some solid depth with the signings of Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele. Mitchell Robinson is also healthy and ready to contribute again. On paper, it’s a competitive team.
Still, one potential gap remains: the backup point guard spot. Jalen Brunson is clearly the leader of this team, but there’s concern about who will support him when he’s off the floor. There’s talk about giving second-year guard Tyler Kolek a shot, but relying on an unproven player in such an important role might be risky, especially for a team that believes it can contend for a title right now.
Veteran options like Russell Westbrook or Malcolm Brogdon could be smart additions. Chris Paul has also been linked to the Knicks in the past, though he seems focused on staying closer to home. Whichever direction the team goes, getting this move right could make all the difference in how far they go next season.
