After five long years, fans of The Old Guard on Netflix have finally been reunited with Charlize Theron’s immortal warrior Andy and her team, but the sequel has stirred up even more questions than it answers.

If you’ve already watched The Old Guard 2, you’ll know it closes on a major cliffhanger, one that leaves several main characters in tricky situations and with no clear resolution. Naturally, fans are wondering: Is a third movie on the way?

Interestingly, the film’s director, Victoria Mahoney, addressed the cliffhanger in an interview with ScreenRant. She explained that the ending wasn’t some calculated move to force a sequel; instead, it came from the team trying to stay true to the story’s deeper ideas.

“The people who spearheaded it, we were concerned and interested in a sense of wonderment and hope,” Mahoney shared. “I wasn’t attached to how we got there. I was attached to [that feeling] of wonderment and hope and strength and fortitude and unity.”

As for whether the cliffhanger was intentional, Mahoney added:

“As far as it being a cliffhanger, I don’t know how to approach things as a mechanism.”

In short, the open ending was more about emotion and theme than setting up a third film on purpose.

Still, this naturally raises the big question: Will we get The Old Guard 3? Will Netflix continue the story and finally show us what happens next to Andy and her immortal crew?

We’ve gathered everything we know so far about a potential third movie. Keep reading for updates on release rumours, cast possibilities, and what the future might hold for this action-packed supernatural saga.

Will there be The Old Guard 3?

Even though The Old Guard 2 ends with a major cliffhanger, suggesting more to come, there’s no official confirmation yet that a third film is actually in the works.

Director Victoria Mahoney, who helmed the second film, has openly said she’s in the dark about any plans for The Old Guard 3. When asked by Entertainment Weekly if a third movie was happening, she replied:

“I genuinely don’t know… I hope for it, and I hope that audiences get it… I won’t be there, but I will be rooting for them. Sincerely, vigorously.”

So, if The Old Guard 3 does happen, it sounds like Mahoney won’t be returning as director, and Netflix will need to find someone new to lead the project.

Charlize Theron, who stars as Andy, also expressed doubt about a third film. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she admitted:

“I’m never confident, no. One thing I’ve learned in this business is that there are no guarantees… we have absolutely no idea what that [third film] would even look like.”

Despite the second movie planting the seeds for more, both Mahoney and Theron are being very real: nothing’s promised yet.

At this point, it looks like everything depends on how The Old Guard 2 performs on Netflix; views, engagement, and audience reactions will likely determine whether a third chapter gets the green light.

So if you’re hoping for The Old Guard 3, the best thing you can do is stream the sequel, share it, and support it loudly. For now, we’re all in wait-and-see mode.

The Old Guard 3 release date

Since The Old Guard 3 hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, predicting a release date is tricky. But let’s look at the timeline so far to get an idea.

The first Old Guard movie was released in 2020, and its sequel, The Old Guard 2, finally dropped in 2025, a long five-year gap. That delay, however, wasn’t entirely intentional.

Filming for the second movie began in 2022, but it ran into some unexpected problems:

1. A fire broke out on set, which paused production.

2. Later on, post-production was delayed due to internal changes at Netflix, further slowing things down.

So while it took five years between the first and second films, it’s fair to say some of that was out of the creators’ hands.

If The Old Guard 3 gets the green light soon and avoids the kind of production issues that affected its predecessor, we could possibly expect it around 2027 at the earliest.

Of course, this depends entirely on whether Netflix gives the go-ahead and how quickly things get moving after that. For now, fans will just have to wait and hope the story continues (and doesn’t take another half-decade to arrive!).

The Old Guard 3 cast

Since The Old Guard 2 ends with a major cliffhanger, it’s safe to say that a third movie would need most of the core cast to return, especially those whose fates are still up in the air.

At the top of the list, you can expect Charlize Theron to return as Andy. Alongside her, KiKi Layne (Nile), Marwan Kenzari (Joe), and Henry Golding (Sung) would all likely reprise their roles, since their characters play key parts in the unresolved story.

Uma Thurman would almost certainly return as the villain, Discord. Her role was expanded in the second movie, and given the way things ended, she seems poised to be the central antagonist in any future chapter.

However, one star we probably won’t see again is Matthias Schoenaerts, whose character Booker died near the end of The Old Guard 2. While this franchise has a way of blurring the lines between life and death, his exit appeared pretty final, at least for now.

If a third film happens, it’ll bring back familiar faces and fan favourites, but don’t expect every single character to make it back this time around.

Here’s a list of cast who is most likely to return :-

  • Charlize Theron as Andromache ‘Andy’ of Scythia
  • KiKi Layne as Nile
  • Marwan Kenzari as Joe
  • Luca Marinelli as Nicky
  • Veronica Van as Quynh
  • Henry Golding as Tuah
  • Uma Thurman as Discord
  • Chiwetel Ejiofor as Copley
