Miley Cyrus has once again shown her raw honesty, this time reflecting on a turbulent chapter of her past when she masked her drug expenses as vintage clothing purchases. Speaking on the Every Single Album podcast, the singer revealed that back in 2015, during the creative process behind her experimental album Miley Cyrus & the Dead Petz, she was deeply immersed in substance use. So much so, she joked that her largest expenses were actually her drug costs, which she would disguise as luxury items for accounting purposes.
Cyrus recounted how she and her team would refer to these expenses as “vintage clothes” to avoid suspicion. She laughingly added, “And every time [my accountant] saw me, she’d be like, ‘Where’s that, like, $15,000 original John Lennon T-shirt that you bought?’ It’s like, ‘Oh, it’s upstairs.’” Her tone might have been playful, but underneath was a clear recognition of the reckless financial and personal decisions she was making at the time.
She reflected on that period with a sense of both awe and relief, saying, “I’m so glad I survived that time in my life.” She clarified that while she doesn’t glamorize that chapter, she’s grateful for the experience, but wouldn’t recommend that kind of lifestyle to anyone else. “I would definitely not encourage anyone else to go this hard,” she admitted, “but the fact that I got through it, I’m very glad I got to do it.”
This isn’t the first time Miley has spoken openly about her past drug use. In earlier interviews, she had previously admitted that during her younger days, she experimented with various substances, describing Hollywood as a “coke town” but expressing a preference for weed and molly, which she described as “happy drugs” that made her feel social and open.
However, she took a turn toward sobriety in 2017 when she got together with her then-husband Liam Hemsworth. At the time, she proudly shared that she had stopped smoking and had been entirely sober. Yet like many during the isolating months of the Covid-19 pandemic, she relapsed, briefly slipping back into old habits. She later revealed that the moment was short-lived, and she regained control within two weeks.
Miley’s story paints a deeply human portrait of someone navigating fame, youth, and personal growth in the public eye. Her willingness to own her past without glorifying it continues to set her apart as one of the most transparent voices in the industry today.
