Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, could already be facing his first internal challenge, with rising star Andrey Santos reportedly growing frustrated after being left out of the lineup during the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in the USA.
Despite being included in the squad, the Brazilian midfielder is yet to make his debut for the Blues and has remained on the bench through Chelsea’s first two group games. With a must-win final group match approaching, the chances of Santos getting minutes are slim, and it’s a decision that could stir discontent, not just from the player but also from his family.
Santos is coming off a standout season with Strasbourg, Chelsea’s sister club in France, and many expected him to be finally integrated into the first team. However, Maresca has so far held back, likely focusing on more experienced players to ensure progression in the tournament.
But Santos’ patience may be wearing thin, and other clubs are starting to take notice. According to The Guardian, German powerhouse Bayern Munich are closely monitoring the situation. The Bundesliga giants are said to be interested in signing the 20-year-old if Chelsea fail to show him a clear path into the squad.
Adding to the frustration was Chelsea’s recent match against Flamengo, a club that would’ve held personal significance for Santos, being a Brazilian native. Many believed that would’ve been the perfect moment to give him his first appearance, but it didn’t happen.
The current situation places added pressure on Maresca. Either he finds a way to get Santos involved and assure him of his role at the club, or risk losing one of Chelsea’s brightest young talents to a European rival. With Chelsea also set to play in the Champions League next season, the hope from within the club is that Santos remains patient. But interest from top clubs like Bayern Munich could test that patience fast.
