The Handmaid’s Tale has officially come to an end with Season 6. The final episode, Season 6 Episode 10, was released on Hulu on May 27, 2025, and wraps up the story of June Osborne after years of fighting for freedom in the harsh world of Gilead. There will not be a Season 7. Hulu and the creators confirmed that this was the final chapter.
The show’s creator, Bruce Miller, had first planned for five seasons, but later extended it to six in order to fully explore June’s transformation—from being a handmaid to becoming a symbol of resistance. The decision to end the series now was intentional, not due to cancellation. The creators wanted to close the story on their own terms.
Co-showrunners Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang explained that the finale was meant to feel both powerful and hopeful. While the show is known for its dark themes, they made sure to leave fans with a sense of strength and possibility. Tuchman said that viewers who’ve been with June from the start will recognize how far she’s come.
Although most of the main storylines are wrapped up in Season 6, there’s one major cliffhanger left unresolved. That part of the story will be picked up in the sequel series, The Testaments.
The Testaments is based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 follow-up novel and is set 15 years after The Handmaid’s Tale. Bruce Miller stepped away from his duties on the original show in 2023 to work on this spinoff. Filming for The Testaments started in April 2025.
The new series will feature both familiar and new characters. Ann Dowd will return as Aunt Lydia, and new cast members include Chase Infiniti as Agnes, Lucy Halliday as Daisy, and Mattea Conforti as Becka. Elisabeth Moss, who played June, won’t act in the new series but will remain involved as an executive producer.
Hulu says The Testaments will have a different tone and style, more of a coming-of-age story than a direct continuation. It’s expected to premiere in 2026. So while The Handmaid’s Tale has ended, the world of Gilead isn’t over just yet.
