It looks like Prime Video is gearing up for its next big teen drama series, and this one might be another beachside hit. The streaming platform is likely bringing We Were Liars to life, a popular young adult (YA) novel written by E. Lockhart.

The book is a bestseller and has a huge fan following, especially among teens and young adults. It’s known for its emotional storyline, family secrets, and a big plot twist that readers still talk about. The story takes place mostly on a private island, giving the show potential to deliver that same summery, beachy vibe as hits like The Summer I Turned Pretty.

Back in 2022, the TV rights to the novel were picked up by Julie Plec’s production company, My So-Called Company, along with Universal Television, two names with a strong track record in making successful TV shows, especially in the young adult genre.

While there’s no official release date yet or confirmation of the cast, the project is very much in the works. And given the popularity of the book, it’s expected to attract a big audience once it’s released.

If you loved emotional teen dramas set in beautiful locations, with secrets, twists, and high-stakes family drama, “We Were Liars” might just be your next favourite binge-watch on Prime Video.

The upcoming Prime Video adaptation of We Were Liars now has its cast revealed. The show, which is based on E. Lockhart’s bestselling novel, has already completed filming and is set to premiere on June 18, 2025. It follows the Sinclair family and a close group of teenagers known as the “Liars,” as they navigate love, loss, and deeply buried secrets during their summers on a private island.

Emily Alyn Lind will star as Cadence Sinclair, the main character who returns to the island one summer after suffering a traumatic brain injury. Shubham Maheshwari plays Gat, an intelligent and thoughtful outsider who often feels out of place among the privileged Sinclairs. Esther McGregor will take on the role of Mirren, who is known for her quiet observance and deep emotional insight, while Joseph Zada plays Johnny, a charming and unpredictable member of the group. Zada will also appear as young Haymitch Abernathy in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel.

The adult cast includes Mamie Gummer as Carrie Sinclair, the eldest of the three Sinclair sisters, who is working to maintain her sobriety. Caitlin FitzGerald plays Penny Sinclair, who is going through a divorce while trying to hold her family together. Candice King, known for her role on The Vampire Diaries, plays Bess Sinclair, the youngest sister, who is ambitious and highly organized. Julie Plec, one of the executive producers, noted that this role is a natural next step for King.

David Morse will appear as Harris Sinclair, the family patriarch who owns the private island where the story unfolds. Rahul Kohli has joined the cast as Ed, Carrie’s partner, taking over the role from Arsher Ali. Wendy Crewson has also joined the series in a recurring role, although details about her character have not yet been revealed.

The series aims to deliver a layered and emotional story, staying true to the original novel while bringing the Sinclair family’s world to life onscreen. With production complete and a strong cast assembled, the show is expected to make a significant impact when it debuts.

We Were Liars plot details: What is We Were Liars about?

The series takes place on Beechwood Island, a privately owned island off the coast of Massachusetts, where the Sinclair family spends every summer. Outwardly, the Sinclairs appear to be the picture of wealth and perfection, but beneath that image lie complicated relationships and long-held secrets.

The story centres on Cadence Sinclair, who experiences a traumatic event at age 15 during one summer on the island. Two years later, she returns, and the other three members of their close-knit group, known as “the Liars,” encourage her to piece together what really happened that summer. As the truth slowly unravels, Cadence is forced to confront painful memories and the reality behind her family’s carefully curated facade.

Is there a trailer for We Were Liars?

Will Emily Lockhart’s prequel book, Family of Liars, fit into all of this?

Julie Plec, who is behind the adaptation of We Were Liars, has confirmed that she will also be adapting the prequel novel, Family of Liars, which explores the hidden past of an earlier generation of the Sinclair family.

In an interview with Deadline, Plec shared that there are already conversations about a possible second season of the series. She explained that if season two moves forward, it will likely incorporate more elements from Family of Liars, shifting focus toward the lives of the mothers and adding greater depth to the Sinclair family’s history.

Plec emphasized that the series will stay faithful to the original book while also expanding the story’s scope. She said the creative team has worked hard to capture the key emotional moments from the novel and build on them by adding complexity to the adult characters. According to her, season two would dig deeper into the experiences of the Sinclair mothers and continue to explore the family’s multigenerational dynamics.
