The past few weeks have been a bit stressful for Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch football star has seen his name pop up in many transfer rumors, with reports saying he might be leaving Barcelona. His season wasn’t the smoothest either, he missed a lot of games due to an ankle injury, which made things more uncertain for his future at the club.

But now, De Jong himself has spoken up and made his intentions clear: he wants to stay.

In an interview with Voetbal Zone, De Jong said he’s hoping to sign a new contract with Barcelona this summer. His current deal runs until June 2026, and so far, there haven’t been talks about an extension. Still, De Jong sounds hopeful.

“I think I’m going to renew for Barça,” he said. “I can’t be 100% sure, but if all goes well, it will happen. My intention is to renew this summer… It’s a negotiation, so you can’t say exactly when, but both sides want the same thing, and I think we’ll reach an agreement.”

That shows he’s being honest — he wants to stay, but he also understands that Barcelona’s final decision matters too.

There’s also another twist in the story. According to reports, De Jong may be planning to cut ties with his current agent, Ali Dursun, who has apparently made past negotiations between the player and the club more complicated. When asked about it, De Jong didn’t want to go into details.

“I can’t talk about my agent right now. I’m focused on the national team, and then we’ll see.”

So, while his heart seems to be with Barcelona, there’s a bit of behind-the-scenes business to handle first.

What Does Barcelona Think?

Not too long ago, Barcelona was actually open to selling De Jong. They were looking to lighten their wage bill and make changes to the team. But that all changed when new coach Hansi Flick arrived.

Under Flick, De Jong became an important part of the team again. The German manager clearly values him highly and sees him as a key player in his system.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta also had good things to say about De Jong recently. Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Laporta said:

“Even though we didn’t win everything, De Jong played very well. He had an ankle injury, which made things tough, but he’s now recovered. He’s a player with energy, courage, and the ability to control the game.”

Laporta also confirmed that the club is working on renewing De Jong’s contract, and both sides are excited to make it happen.

“We’re determined to do whatever it takes to keep him,” Laporta said.

What has Franke De Jong given to the team?

In the 2023/24 season, De Jong played 46 matches, including 26 La Liga games. He scored twice and provided a couple of assists — not huge numbers, but his real value is in his presence and how he helps control the flow of the game from midfield. He’s a calm, smart, and steady player, and Flick clearly sees him as the backbone of his team.

So overall, De Jong wants to stay, and Barcelona seems ready to keep him. But there are still a few things — like agent changes and contract details — that need to be sorted out first.

The future looks hopeful, but it’s not signed and sealed just yet.
