So, what does this mean for The Wheel of Time season 4?
Sometimes when a TV show gets cancelled, the people who make it try to find another streaming service or TV channel to continue the series. This is called “shopping it around.” It actually happens pretty often, even with smaller or less popular shows. For example, two shows from NBC, a comedy called Night Court and a crime series called Found, were recently cancelled, and now the creators are trying to see if someone else wants to pick them up.
But here’s the catch: even though this kind of “rescue” happens, it’s still pretty rare for shows, especially dramas and comedies, to get picked up by other platforms. That’s because most companies don’t want to invest in a show that’s already been cancelled. If a show had trouble getting enough viewers the first time, other platforms worry it will happen again, and they don’t want to take that risk.
Now, in the case of The Wheel of Time, things are a bit more complicated. Yes, fewer people in the U.S. were watching Season 3 compared to earlier seasons. But the show was actually doing very well internationally. In fact, some of the newer episodes were the #1 most-watched in several countries. So clearly, people around the world still liked it.
But even with that success overseas, it still wasn’t enough to save the show. Why? Mostly because it was very expensive to make. The big fantasy sets, costumes, effects, and large cast all cost a lot of money. So, even though the show had a loyal global audience, it just didn’t make financial sense for Amazon to keep going.
The two companies behind the series, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, have now decided not to try and move it somewhere else. They’re not going to offer it to Netflix or Disney+ or any other service. They might feel the show is still useful as a Prime Video exclusive, meaning it could still attract new viewers to their own platform even if no new seasons are made.
