At the 78th Cannes Film Festival, an alarming incident occurred on the famous Croisette promenade when a palm tree was uprooted by strong winds and fell, seriously injuring a man in his 30s. The victim, a Japanese producer attending the festival, was struck near Gray d’Albion beach around mid-morning on Saturday.
Festival attendee Marthy Fink described the moment, saying, “I was sitting when there was a terrible gust of wind. I heard a cry and turned around and saw that a palm tree had been uprooted.”
This year’s edition of Cannes saw over 15,000 cinema professionals attending, alongside thousands of tourists and day-trippers eager to catch glimpses of the stars. Among the high-profile visitors on Saturday morning were Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone, who were attending the Palais des Festivals for a photo call and press conference for Ari Aster’s film Eddington.
Following the incident, the affected section of the promenade was swiftly closed for safety. The injury serves as a reminder that even during such glamorous events, unexpected hazards can arise.
