The fourth episode of The Last of Us Season 2 was a big moment for Bella Ramsey’s Ellie and Isabela Merced’s Dina. The two were chasing Abby but ended up in serious trouble. When they ran into soldiers from the WLF, Ellie had to save Dina from an Infected attack.
That’s when Ellie’s immunity was revealed, shocking Dina. Usually, a bite from an Infected turns a person into a monster, but Ellie didn’t change. Dina became suspicious and kept Ellie at gunpoint all night.
Dina only let Ellie go after she explained why she was immune. In another surprise, Dina told Ellie she was pregnant with Jesse’s baby. After a lot of emotional ups and downs, they finally admitted their feelings for each other.
Kate Herron, the episode’s director, talked about the relationship between Ellie and Dina. She said they’re always in danger, so moments of peace and happiness are rare for them. She told Deadline, “There are very rarely moments for these quiet conversations or moments of joy.”
Herron said she filmed several versions of the emotional scene to get it just right. She remembered talking with Bella Ramsey about how to play the moment. In one version, she suggested Bella shouldn’t even look at Isabela Merced, to show shyness.
The director added that everyone involved understood what they wanted to show, which made the scene feel real and powerful. “It’s such an iconic scene,” she said.
The episode also gave more backstory about Jeffrey Wright’s character, Isaac. It started with a flashback to his dark past working with FEDRA.
Herron said she loves how the show has expanded on the original game and taken the story in new directions.
