There’s a lot of buzz surrounding HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, and fans are especially curious about who’s joining the cast. So far, HBO has announced several actors for major roles, but none of them were part of the original film series.
According to recent reports, the show’s producers are intentionally avoiding casting any of the original movie actors in their old roles or bringing them back on screen at all. The idea is to give the series its own identity, separate from the beloved film franchise. However, that doesn’t mean they’re completely shutting the door on former cast members.
In fact, The Daily Mail has reported that Tom Felton—best known for playing Draco Malfoy—is set to be involved in the new show. But this time, he’ll be working behind the scenes. Details about his role are still under wraps, but it sounds like Warner Bros. is hoping he’ll contribute creatively without actually appearing in front of the camera.
An insider explained, “The producers want to keep the television series separate from the original movies.” They added that Felton’s continued support of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling likely played a part in his involvement. “Everyone knows that Tom has Jo’s blessing,” the source said. “While others distanced themselves from her, he remained respectful—even if he didn’t always agree with her views.”
Rowling has been the center of major controversy in recent years due to her comments on transgender issues. While many of the original Harry Potter actors have openly criticized or distanced themselves from her, Felton has kept a neutral stance—staying respectful without diving into the debate.
As of now, Warner Bros. hasn’t officially confirmed Felton’s behind-the-scenes role, so we’ll have to wait and see how he fits into this new chapter of the Wizarding World.
In the meantime, the casting announcements for the HBO series are rolling in. The confirmed lineup includes:
-
John Lithgow as Professor Albus Dumbledore
-
Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall
-
Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
-
Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
-
Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch
-
Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell
The new series promises to take a fresh approach to the beloved story, with a completely new cast and creative vision. While fans may miss seeing familiar faces, it looks like HBO is aiming to reintroduce the magic of Harry Potter for a new generation—while still honoring the legacy of the past, in subtle ways.
