Henry Golding is no longer the fresh face from Crazy Rich Asians and A Simple Favor. With more acting mileage under his belt, the British-Malaysian star says he walked onto the set of Another Simple Favor — the highly anticipated sequel to the 2018 thriller-comedy — as a more seasoned and self-assured actor.
In a recent interview on Today, Golding reflected on what it was like reuniting with co-stars Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, and how the dynamic shifted for him this time around. “A Simple Favor was only my second film after Crazy Rich Asians, so I was the greenhorn on set. I was constantly like, ‘Yes ma’am, whatever you need, sir,’” he said with a laugh. “Now, after more experience and really finding my voice as an actor, I could contribute more — throw in suggestions, pitch lines, really be part of the creative process.”
In fact, director Paul Feig liked several of Golding’s on-the-spot ideas so much that he kept many of them in the final cut. Golding likened returning to the role to slipping on “worn-in trainers and going for a casual walk” — a smooth and natural reunion with familiar collaborators.
But that’s not all the actor had to reveal.
During the same conversation, Golding dropped a bombshell that has Crazy Rich Asians fans buzzing: the beloved blockbuster is being reimagined as a television series. “We’ve got a longer-format series coming, which gives us way more runway to dive deep into this incredible world,” he said. “Fans only got a glimpse the first time — now, we’re going to explore so much more.”
As for Another Simple Favor, it premiered last month at the South by Southwest Festival and is set to stream on Prime Video starting May 1. Directed again by Paul Feig and co-written by Jessica Sharzer and Laeta Kalogridis, the sequel boasts a stacked ensemble cast, including Andrew Rannells, Michele Morrone, Elena Sofia Ricci, Allison Janney, and more.
With a more confident Henry Golding, the return of fan-favorite characters, and a juicier, darker mystery, Another Simple Favor promises to be a wickedly stylish follow-up — and Golding is bringing a whole new edge to the game.
