The New York Yankees are thriving on offense in 2025, leading the American League with 271 runs scored, but there’s one notable weak spot in the lineup: Anthony Volpe.
After a blazing hot start to the season, Volpe has cooled off considerably, now slashing a disappointing .218/.310/.346. That’s a familiar trend, in 365 career games, the former top prospect is hitting just .229 with a .672 OPS. His glove has kept him valuable, but his bat is falling further behind expectations.
Enter the trade buzz.
According to Jake Elman of Athlon Sports, the Yankees may soon have a tough decision to make, especially with George Lombard Jr. tearing up Double-A at age 20. If the Yanks truly see Lombard Jr. as their shortstop of the future, Volpe could become expendable… and a swap with the Atlanta Braves for second baseman Ozzie Albies might be the boldest idea on the table.
Why Ozzie Albies?
While Albies is a three-time All-Star and a key figure in Atlanta’s recent dominance, he’s not untouchable. He’s posted a career-low .619 OPS this season after a down year in 2024. At 28, he might benefit from a change of scenery, and Yankee Stadium’s short right field porch could be just what his power numbers need.
Meanwhile, Atlanta’s current shortstop, Nick Allen, is hitting a meager .550 OPS over four seasons. Volpe would be a clear defensive upgrade, with the Braves’ deep offense potentially masking his hitting woes. Plus, Volpe is under team control through 2029, while Albies could hit free agency by the end of 2027 if his options are exercised.
Don’t hold your breath for a mid-season blockbuster, Elman says a deal during the season is unlikely. But come offseason, if both players continue trending down, a Volpe-for-Albies swap could make more sense for both clubs. It would be a risky shakeup, but with upside for two franchises aiming for October greatness.
Bottom line: Keep your eyes peeled. Volpe’s future in pinstripes might not be as secure as it once seemed.
