Filipino superstar Nora Aunor has passed away at the age of 71. Her death was confirmed by her children through social media posts on Wednesday, though the cause of death has not yet been revealed.
In a heartfelt tribute, Aunor’s son, Ian De Leon, expressed that his mother was the “heart of the family” and a source of “unconditional love, strength, and warmth.”
Born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor on May 21, 1951, in Barrio San Francisco, Iriga, Camarines Sur, she came from a family of nine siblings. She was introduced to singing by her grandmother, Theresa, and her screen name was given to her by her aunt, Belén Aunor.
Aunor’s rise to fame was remarkable, considering her humble beginnings. She initially sold peanuts and water at train stations before becoming one of the Philippines’ most beloved stars. She began her career as a singer in the 1960s, winning a radio singing contest that propelled her into the spotlight. She later transitioned into acting, cementing her place as one of the best actresses in Philippine cinema.
Over the years, she worked with four National Artists for Film Awardees—Lino Brocka, Gerardo de Leon, Lamberto Avellana, and Ishmael Bernal—a unique distinction in her generation.
Aunor’s extensive filmography includes over 200 projects, with standout films like Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos (1976), Ina Ka ng Anak Mo (1979), Bona (1980), Bulaklak sa City Jail (1984), and Muling Umawit ang Puso (1995). Her performance in Andrea, Paano ba ang Maging Isang Ina? (1990) earned her numerous Best Actress awards. In 2012, she also won Best Actress at the Asian Film Awards for her portrayal in Thy Womb.
In 2022, Aunor received the prestigious National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts award, the highest recognition for actors in the country. Her final screen appearance was in the 2024 film Mananambal, and she also appeared in the legal drama Lilet Matias, Attorney-at-Law.
Aunor’s life was not without its challenges. In 2005, she was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport for allegedly carrying methamphetamine and a glass pipe in her luggage. However, the case was dismissed in 2017 after she successfully completed a drug diversion program.
Aunor was previously married to actor Christopher de Leon, with whom she shares five children: Ian, Lotlot, Matet, Kiko, and Kenneth. The couple divorced in 1996.
Her passing marks the end of an era for Filipino cinema, leaving behind a lasting legacy that inspired countless fans and fellow artists alike.
