Billie Eilish has come a long way in her relationship with her name. In a candid conversation with British Vogue, the artist opened up about how she initially hated her name as a child. According to Eilish, she was often teased for having a “boy’s name,” recalling that she wanted a more “girly” name like Violet or Lavender, something “pretty” and “flowery.”
As she grew older, however, her perspective on her name shifted. Now, she says she absolutely loves it and can’t imagine any other name suiting her better. She shared that it feels “exactly perfect” for who she is. Interestingly, Eilish was named after her grandfather, William, though she never met him. She also mentioned that the first woman she knew with the name Billie was Doctor Who star Billie Piper. While she admired Piper, she admitted to feeling a little “jealous and mad” that anyone else would share her name.
Billie’s name may have started as a source of frustration, but it’s now one of the most recognized names in the music industry, as she continues to dominate headlines with her incredible work. Most recently, she surprised fans with a surprise appearance at Coachella, where she joined Charli XCX on stage to perform their track “Guess,” much to the delight of the crowd.
Eilish’s journey with her name is a perfect example of how growing into oneself can change the way we see the things that once felt like a burden. Now, it’s clear that Billie is the only name that fits her iconic persona.
