Aimee Lou Wood has publicly criticized Saturday Night Live for their parody of The White Lotus Season 3, calling the sketch “mean and unfunny.” The controversial segment, which aired on April 12 as part of the White POTUS sketch, featured a blend of HBO’s The White Lotus and political satire. In the parody, comedian Sarah Sherman portrayed Wood’s character Chelsea with exaggerated, oversized teeth, which Wood found to be distasteful and unkind.
Wood, who has been open about her sensitivity to comments regarding her appearance, especially her teeth, shared her thoughts on Instagram, expressing her disappointment. She acknowledged the satirical nature of SNL but felt that the joke could have been more thoughtful, nuanced, and intelligent rather than relying on a “cheap” visual gag. She also pointed out that the sketch’s portrayal of her accent was inaccurate, which further added to her frustration.
While she has previously discussed the pressure of fitting into traditional beauty standards, especially in American television, Wood has also received support from fans who admire her authenticity. She mentioned that it was reassuring to see many agreeing with her perspective, which led her to feel better about speaking out.
After voicing her concerns, NBC, the network behind SNL, issued an apology to Wood. She confirmed the apology in a lighthearted Instagram Story, ending the saga on a positive note, with a playful filter that highlighted her distinctive teeth.
In the end, Wood’s outspokenness helped shed light on the issue, and the apology from SNL seemed to close the chapter on the controversy.
